Our Story

Bashir Persian Rugs is a family business that was built from the ground up, from outfitting palatial homes in Asia with exquisite, hand-knotted Persian rugs to decorating today's North American homes with unique high quality carpets. Mr. Shuja Bashir founded the company in 1976 when he saw a void in the Canadian carpet market for a showroom dedicated to fine wool and silk carpets with outstanding decorative appeal at reasonable prices. His family had been established rug dealers since the 1900's back home in his native land of the princely state of Kashmir. There, he was exposed to all the facets of the carpet business: sheep shearers, carpet drawing and design, weavers, merchants who brought finished and unwashed carpets for sale to preparing carpets for visiting foreign clients. After living in Germany, Austria, Italy and Libya, he settled in Montreal. There he opened his first carpet showroom which he today manages with his dedicated staff including daughter and son.

Mr. Bashir's appreciation and understanding of carpets as works of art quickly propelled Bashir Persian Rugs into a pre-eminent position in the Canadian marketplace. It is for this reason that it stands today as the preferred destination of top Montreal designers and interior decorators.
